Last night’s Golden Globes had a lot of great moments, but one of the best ones had to be Jodie Foster’s acceptance speech as she was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.
“I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public,” Jodie said. “So, a declaration … that I’m a little nervous about,” she continued. “But I’m just gonna put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right?”
As the audience wondered if Jodie was finally going to announce what most of us already think to be true, Jodie steered her speech in another direction; “I am . . . single!” she said to the amusement of the audience. “Yes I am, I am single. No, I’m kidding — but I mean I’m not really kidding.”
It’s not exactly a secret that Jodie, 50, is gay. The rumors have been there for years, and, for the most part, most of us have never questioned those rumors, as we do many others. However, Jodie has never publicly acknowledged this aspect of her life, and in her impactful speech last night she finally did, while never actually saying the words out right.
“I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers . . . now I’m told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show.”
Her audience enraptured and very visibly moved, Jodie continued; “There is no way I could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, ex-partner in love, but righteous soul sister in life…Cydney Bernard. Thank you, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family”
Jodie then went on to thank her mother, as well as her sons with Cydney, Charlie and Kit.
The actress raised eyebrows as she concluded her speech saying; “Well, I’m never going to be up on this stage again. On any stage, for that matter. Change, you’ve gotta love it,” making everyone wonder if she is planning on retiring from acting. When questioned backstage about her cryptic statement, Jodie said that she still loved acting and was not planning on quitting any time soon.
